How soil health, crop rotations and regenerative practices are influencing breeding strategies and variety development.

Regenerative agriculture has become one of the most widely used terms in agriculture, food and sustainability discussions. It is also one of the least precisely defined. As Seed World Europe explored in Regen Ag — Fad or Future?,regenerative agriculture brings together a range of practices, from cover crops and longer rotations to reduced tillage, soil health and biodiversity. For some, it means reduced tillage and permanent soil cover. For others, it includes livestock integration, diverse rotations, lower inputs, improved biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

For seed companies, the important point is not whether regenerative agriculture becomes one fixed model. It probably will not. The more relevant question is whether farming systems are moving towards soil health, input efficiency and greater biological complexity. On that point, the direction of travel seems clear.

And this is where cover crops become important.

Cover crops are one of the most tangible ways in which regenerative agriculture enters the field. They are not an abstract concept, a policy slogan or a distant technology. They are seed-based, agronomic, practical and measurable. That makes them a natural point of connection between regenerative ambitions and the seed sector.

From Concept to Cropping System

Regenerative agriculture is best understood not as a single recipe, but as a shift in the way production systems are designed. Instead of focusing only on the crop being harvested, more attention is placed on what happens between cash crops, how soils are protected, how nutrients cycle and how biological activity is maintained.

Cover crops play a central role in this discussion. Depending on the species and management system, they can help protect soil from erosion, improve soil structure, capture residual nitrogen, support beneficial insects, suppress weeds and add organic matter. In regions facing heavier rainfall, longer dry periods or stricter nutrient rules, these functions are becoming more important.

Europe adds its own complexity. Farmers are being asked to produce efficiently while reducing nutrient losses, protecting water quality, lowering dependence on chemical plant protection products and contributing to biodiversity goals. These pressures will not disappear. They are likely to become part of the operating environment for European farming.

For breeders and seed companies, this means that the future variety is increasingly judged within a system, not in isolation.

Why Cover Crops Matter to Seed Companies

Cover crops offer a practical commercial hook into regenerative agriculture. They create demand for species, mixtures, regional adaptation, reliable establishment, seed quality and agronomic advice.

This is different from simply selling another crop. Cover crop success depends heavily on purpose. Is the farmer trying to fix nitrogen, or reduce erosion, or improve the soil structure? Perhaps suppress weeds, feed livestock or break a pest or disease cycle? Maybe even to support pollinators or improve trafficability? The answer determines the species, mixture, sowing date, termination method and fit with the following crop. That creates opportunity, but also complexity.

Seed companies may increasingly need to move from offering generic mixtures to providing more targeted solutions. A cover crop blend for a dry Mediterranean system will not necessarily serve the same purpose as one used in a wet northern European rotation. Similarly, a mixture designed for nitrogen fixation will differ from one focused on deep rooting, winter cover or weed suppression.

The commercial opportunity therefore lies not only in selling seed, but in helping farmers choose the right cover crop for the right agronomic objective.

Breeding for Function, Not Just Biomass

As cover crops become more important, the question becomes: are we breeding them seriously enough? Many cover crop species have historically received far less breeding attention than major cash crops. Yet their performance characteristics matter. Fast establishment, winter hardiness, root architecture, nitrogen fixation, flowering time, pest and disease interactions, biomass production and ease of termination can all influence whether a cover crop succeeds or fails.

In the future, cover crop breeding may focus less on one-dimensional growth and more on function. A radish may be valued for rooting depth. A legume for nitrogen fixation. A grass for soil cover and erosion control. A flowering species for biodiversity and beneficial insects. A mixture for combining several functions in one rotation.

This also raises the importance of testing. Cover crops need to be assessed not only for their own performance, but for their effect on the following crop. If a cover crop improves soil structure but creates water competition, pest carryover or termination challenges, farmers will be cautious. The value proposition must be demonstrated in real farming systems.

The Commercial Opportunity — and the Complexity

The growth of cover crops will not be automatic. Adoption depends on economics, machinery, climate, advisory support, policy incentives and farmer confidence. In some systems, benefits may be visible quickly. In others, soil improvements may take years to translate into measurable returns.

That is why seed companies should be careful not to overpromise. Cover crops are not a universal solution. They are a tool, and like all tools, their value depends on how and where they are used.

But the direction remains significant. Food companies, policymakers and farmers are all paying more attention to soil health, carbon, biodiversity and input efficiency. Cover crops sit at the intersection of these priorities. They are also highly visible and relatively easy to communicate, which makes them attractive in sustainability programmes.

Over time, we may see more partnerships between seed companies, farmers, agronomists, food companies, carbon programmes and biological input providers. Cover crops could become part of broader packages: seed, advice, data, measurement and sustainability reporting.

Preparing for the Next Two Decades

For the seed sector, regenerative agriculture should not be treated only as a communications theme. It is a signal that farming systems are changing. Cover crops are one of the clearest places where that change becomes relevant to breeding, product development and commercial strategy.

Companies that invest early in locally adapted cover crop genetics, mixture design and agronomic support may be better positioned as demand grows. Those that treat cover crops as a low-value side category may miss a wider shift towards system-based seed solutions.

The broader lesson is simple: as farming systems become more complex, seed companies will need to think beyond the individual variety. The future may increasingly belong to companies that understand rotations, soils, biological interactions and the economics of whole-farm resilience. • Treat cover crops as a strategic portfolio opportunity, not just a niche sustainability product
• Invest in locally adapted species and mixtures with clear agronomic functions
• Build partnerships with farmers, agronomists, carbon programmes and food companies to demonstrate value beyond seed sales

The question is no longer whether regenerative agriculture will influence the seed sector, but how seed companies can turn that influence into credible, practical and profitable solutions.
