Solynta has announced the registration of its diploid hybrid true potato variety SOLHY019 on the Dutch National Variety Register. The variety was approved and published by the Dutch Board of Plant Varieties.

The company says this is the first registration in the Netherlands of a diploid hybrid potato variety grown from hybrid true potato seed, or HTPS, according to a press release.

Peter Poortinga, CEO of Solynta, said the registration shows hybrid potato breeding has moved from research into commercial use. He called it a major milestone for Solynta and the potato sector, while noting the company will continue developing improved varieties for global markets.

Regulatory Approval

Official approval by the Dutch Variety Release Committee is used to assess whether registered varieties meet official standards for quality and performance. Solynta says the registration also supports its international market access plans for hybrid true potato seed.

Ard Rijlaarsdam, Market Access and Regulatory Affairs Lead at Solynta, said the Dutch registration gives Solynta the regulatory credibility needed to introduce its diploid hybrid potato varieties in international markets and support future registrations worldwide.

Hybrid True Potato Seed

Hybrid true potato seed allows potato crops to be grown from true seed rather than seed tubers. The approach can make planting material easier to transport and store and may reduce some disease and spoilage risks associated with tubers.

The registration of SOLHY019 is Solynta’s first official Dutch variety listing and could support future registrations of potato varieties grown from hybrid true potato seed.

“With this registration, we are not just introducing a new variety — we are opening the door to a new category of potato varieties with, for example, strong Late Blight resistances,” added Peter Poortinga. “We believe this is a turning point for global potato production, and we are proud to lead this revolution together with our partners, growers, and other stakeholders.”
