The Swiss government has initiated consultations on a draft law regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and new breeding technologies aimed at reducing pesticide use in agriculture and enhancing plant resistance to drought.

The new regulation focuses on plants developed using new breeding technologies that do not involve transgenic genetic material and offer added value to agriculture or consumers, according to Swiss news outlet swissinfo.ch.

In response to public concerns about GMOs, the government is calling for caution, as stated in its press release on Wednesday. The control measures will be more stringent than those set by the European Union. The approval process will consider the associated risks, with the government aiming to encourage innovation and promote more sustainable use of natural resources.

The consultation period will remain open until July 9, and the existing GMO moratorium has been extended until 2032.
