Drawing on Denmark’s strong expertise and leadership in plant breeding and seed production, Euroseeds is confident that the incoming Danish presidency will prioritize concluding negotiations on the proposed Regulation for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).
Plant breeding innovation plays a key role in enhancing the competitiveness of European agriculture and supporting the shift to a more sustainable food system. NGTs — such as gene editing — are essential tools that enable breeders to develop improved plant varieties, meet market demands, and help maintain the EU’s global leadership in plant breeding research, product development, and seed exports, according to a press release.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU for its commitment and hard work on this file over the past months,” said Garlich von Essen, Secretary General & CEO of Euroseeds on eve of the Polish presidency. “Few have imagined that we would get as far as we are today.”
Although the final political trilogue meeting, initially scheduled to conclude the discussions, was ultimately cancelled, this should not be regarded as a substantive setback to the negotiations.
“It is well-known that there are still some important points where agreement has not yet been reached,” von Essen added, stressing the expectation of a continuation of negotiations under the Danish presidency as soon as possible.
“But we feel that there is a general appreciation of the key importance of this file not only for the seed sector, but laying the foundation for future innovation, competitiveness and quality of our EU agriculture. And there is a strong commitment to find the necessary compromises and solutions to address remaining issues and concerns.”
