Thirty-one agri-food value chain representatives are urging Members of the European Parliament to swiftly adopt the proposed EU Regulation on plants produced by certain new genomic techniques (NGTs), based on the December 2025 trilogue compromise text and without further amendments.
The signatories say a clear EU legal framework for NGT plants is urgently needed to strengthen the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of European agriculture and food supply chains. They argue that Europe needs faster breeding progress to respond to growing challenges such as pest pressure, climate volatility, market uncertainty, and international competition.
According to a press release on the Euroseeds website, the organisations support the compromise text because it provides a balanced and workable approach. In particular, it distinguishes conventional-like Category 1 NGT plants, which are equivalent to conventionally bred plants, from NGT plants that would continue to be regulated as GMOs.
The representatives also welcome the agreed provisions on transparency for farmers and growers, including seed bag labelling for conventional-like NGT seeds, while maintaining practical feasibility for operators across the value chain. They also highlight the importance of rules that protect intellectual property while ensuring broad access to innovation under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory conditions.
The group warns that introducing amendments at this stage could delay implementation and prevent Europe from catching up with other regions that have already advanced their regulatory approaches to NGTs. They call on MEPs to support the trilogue compromise text in the upcoming Environment Committee and plenary votes.
